The House of Fairy Tales presents

The Matchbox Project 2015

The Other Art Fair
15th – 18th October

The House of Fairy Tales is a children’s arts charity founded in 2011 by Deborah Curtis and Gavin Turk.

Our vision is for mainstream education to undergo a radical change, with child-centred, cross-curricular creative learning at its heart.

We stage artist-led events and projects with schools, galleries, trusts and institutions working with hundreds of artists, creative educationalist, scientists, performers and philosophers.

This year The House of Fairy Tales is the official charity for The Other Art Fair, to celebrate this we have launched The Matchbox Project 2015, this is the first of an annual exhibition challenging artists to make miniature artworks inspired by these miniscule containers.

A tiny flame for keeping ingenuity and imagination alight.

To bid on these works please contact us clicking on the link on the relevant page, giving the amount you wish to bid.

All proceeds from the Matchbox Project 2015 will go towards The House of Fairy Tales’ 2016 school workshops programme.

The Game

paper, letterpress printed from hand-set moveable metal type on Albion Press
7 × 4 × 1¾ cm

The evolution of the print industry in the 18th century allowed for the first time to reproduce images and text. The method used for this project remains the same process. I wanted to display two identical matchboxes that replicate the method and are functional at the same time.

Each matchbox containes 7 pairs of images printed from original woodblocks.

Calling All Rabbits

matchboxes, acrylic, silver and gold leaf

Calling all Rabbits refers to a childhood joke: How do you get 100 rabbits on a matchbox? You turn a matchbox into a walkie talkie and speak into it: “calling all rabbits...”

Chin Keeler and Emma Tornero work collaboratively, suspending their individual artistic vision and preconceived ideas in an animated dialogue of polar styles. Both work on the same piece at the same time, intuitively sourcing imagery or deliberating on a concept or theme.
